North Macedonia waste prevention fact sheet

Waste prevention objectives of the program

Primary intention: to overcome the unacceptable environmental situation with regard to impacts of improper waste management on air, water, soil and the natural environment as well as public health

Follow-up intention: to reach complete control over generated waste streams, to reduce waste quantities and its hazardous potential, to achieve the optimal material/energy recovery and final disposal of waste by means of the optimal and contemporary system of new infrastructure facilities.

Current situation
• Just 0.26 % of the total amount of municipal solid waste was recycled or composted in 2012
• Fractions of waste that can be recycled in a cost-effective manner in North Macedonia include plastics, secondary and tertiary packaging, used tyres, waste oils and lubricants, scrap metal, and waste electric and electronic equipment
• As a substitute for non-renewable natural resources, waste contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
• Producer responsibility for packaging waste entered into force in January 2010
